This fall will mark four years since the famous one-handed catch play by Odell Beckham Jr. This catch subsequently put him on the map and ever since then he has consistently been a top wide receiver in the NFL. Let’s take a look at some of the key members of the famous catch and what has happened to them since this iconic play.
Odell Beckham Jr.
In 2014, Odell Beckham fell to the Giants ta pick number twelve in the first round. In a loaded draft full of star players surprisingly Odell flew under the radar in the pre-draft process. After being the third receiver taken off the board behind Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans, Odell is the best one out of the three. He is one of the most explosive players in the league and arguably a top three receiver in the league. On top of that he has put up record breaking numbers and stats throughout his first four seasons in the league. Odell has only gone up from the moment he made that incredible one-handed catch.
Brandon Carr
Brandon Carr was the cornerback that let up the play. Not only was he the one who let up the play, but he also got a pass interference call on him during the play. Since the catch, Carr continued playing for the Cowboys until 2016 and then in 2017 he signed with the Ravens via free agency. Carr has been a below average corner for most of his career and is more of a depth guy rather than being a full-time starter. Pro Football Focus has him ranked as the 69th best corner in the league in 2017, so that gives a sense as to what his skill set has been.
Eli Manning
The longtime franchise quarterback of the Giants is of course the one who threw the pass to the sideline right before the end zone. A strong argument can be made that Eli’s career was revived due to the arrival of Odell after coming off a shaky 2013 season. Since the catch, Eli has been shaky for the past few years and the signs of an aging quarterback are very apparent. With a quick trip to the playoffs in 2016 where he actually played decent, he threw for a career high of 35 touchdowns in 2015. Eli is still Eli though, and the quality of his play has gone down.
Tom Coughlin
While things turned out great for Odell and his career things did not turn out great for longtime head coach Tom Coughlin. After having only one winning season since the 2011 Superbowl win, Coughlin was forced to resign from the position after having a disappointing season in 2015 with one of the worst defenses in NFL history. After his tenure with the Giants, Coughlin spent one season in 2016 with the NFL’s football operations department. During the 2017 offseason Coughlin had interviewed for the vacant head coaching job of the Jaguars. While the job was given to Doug Marrone, he was hired by the Jaguars as vice president of football operations and was a huge factor in getting the Jaguars to the 2017 AFC Championship game.
Ben McAdoo
Ben McAdoo was hired to become the Giants’ new offensive coordinator in 2014 after the abysmal season that they had in 2013. McAdoo is the one who called the play that would make Odell famous. McAdoo’s offense provided a new jolt to the struggling offense of the Giants and they were a top offense with him at the helm of coordinator. With the forced resignation of Tom Coughlin at the end of the 2015 season, McAdoo was hired to become head coach of the team. The main reason for his hiring was due to his high scoring offense during his two years as offensive coordinator. Many players and staff, including Eli Manning, vouched for him to get the job. His tenure as head coach was a short one as he was fired after Week 13 of the 2017 season due to the offense struggling immensely during his two years as head coach. The offense did not reach 30 points one time during his tenure, which was the complete opposite of when he was the offensive coordinator. McAdoo was considered for the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach and the offensive coordinator position with the Vikings and the Browns, but as of now he remains unemployed and could find his way back into the league next year.
