Deionte Thompson Will Be Great

Deionte Thompson is Alabama’s newest golden boy on defense. He is the perfect NFL safety. I would like to see Thompson add some weight if he wants to continue to play so physical. He is currently 6’1” and 196 lbs.

Thompson is very good in coverage. His range and explosiveness let him make a play on the ball consistently. He isn’t just a zone safety. He has shown on multiple occasions that he can hold his own in man coverage. He does a great job of flipping his hips or staying with the receiver on more complex routes. If the opposing team’s quarterback dares to test him, he makes a play on the ball frequently.

Through eight games this season, Thompson has filled out the stat sheet with 46 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 5 pass deflections. The majority of his tackles come due to his willingness as a run stopper. Thompson is a quality tackler. He doesn’t always wrap up, and likes to hit rather than tackle, but sometimes it pays off.

Thompson makes lots of plays as a ball hawk. In the 2018 National Championship game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide, Jake Fromm launched a ball down the left sideline, and it was right on the money. Thompson sprinted over and leaped into the air to make one of the best touchdown saving pass deflections I have seen.

Thompson is currently ranked as my number one safety prospect, and number 6 overall prospect with a grade of 88.5. I think he can easily be a top safety at the next level.
