Is It Time For The Packers To Fire Mike McCarthy?

It’s no secret that HC Mike McCarthy is on the hot seat following another bad loss Thursday night vs. the Seahawks. Most of Green Bay’s fans want McCarthy fired as soon as possible, but they probably won’t see it happen for a few more months. This brings up the question, is it time for the Packers to fire Mike McCarthy?

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport mentioned that the disconnect between McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers is one of the reasons why management would like to part ways with him at the end of the season.

In his head coaching career, McCarthy has a record of 125-74-2 (.627). With a record like that, you’d think I’m crazy for asking this question. But, it may not be as crazy as you think. McCarthy was hired by Green Bay in 2006 after spending a year in San Francisco as their OC. This was McCarthy’s 2nd stint in Green Bay when he was their QB coach in 1999. McCarthy has 1 superbowl win with the Packers, coming in SB XLV when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25.

Green Bay signed McCarthy to a 1-year extension on January 2, 2018, after going 7-9 in 2017, decent enough for them to rank 3rd in the NFC South.

So far this season, McCarthy’s Packers are 4-5-1 (.450) with 6 games left in the season. The remaining games on their schedule include the Minnesota Vikings (11/25), Arizona Cardinals (12/2), Atlanta Falcons (12/9), Chicago Bears (12/16), New York Jets (12/23), and the Detroit Lions (12/30).

McCarthy mentioned after last Thursday’s loss to Seattle, “That’s the job,” McCarthy said of the external expectations. “That’s the way this business has gone. I’m not going to get into comparables, but at the end of the day that’s part of the job responsibility of the head coach.” He went on to say, “That’s the job,” McCarthy said of the external expectations. “That’s the way this business has gone. I’m not going to get into comparables, but at the end of the day that’s part of the job responsibility of the head coach.”, per ESPN.

McCarthy may be on borrowed time, so it would be smart to go out with a bang and improve his résumé for future coaching opportunities.
