Dre’Mont Jones Scouting Report

NAME: Dre’Mont Jones

SCHOOL: Ohio State

CONFERENCE: Big10

POSITION: Defensive tackle

CLASS: RS Junior

RECRUITMENT RATING: 4-star

HT: 6-2

WT: 295

Ball Get Off: First step is elite. Possesses rare explosiveness and burst that overwhelms his adversaries. Also does a good job of keying on the snap count throughout games.

Hand Usage: Very versed with his hands in terms of pass rushing. Strikes are fluid and methodical and flashes some impressive counter moves. Also makes a concerted effort to keep his chest clean with his hands. Run fits are adequate. Uses his length and quick punch to create leverage. However, hand placement is poor at times. Needs to win the hand battle on a more consistent basis. Stack and shed technique could be cleaner as well.

Pad Level and Flexibility: Has a bad habit of popping out of his stance. Pad level is often high and hips seem stiff. Doesn’t look comfortable when squating down to maintain his position. With that being said, the combine (mainly the agilities) will be big for his evaluation. Does not do well against double teams because of insufficient pad level but does use his length to create separation.

Motor: Motor is always hot. Illustrated moments of falling down and getting back up to make a play. Jones is all hustle.

Pass Rush Ability: Usually has a pass rush plan and knows how to set up his opponents with counter moves and jab steps. His arsenal of moves is impressive. Is most effective when penetrating or attacking his opponents’ sides. Can bull rush but it isn’t his forte. Pad level issues might cause him trouble at the next level.

Awareness: Smart football player who understands how to read offenses. Does a great job of establishing control of blockers to diagnose plays. Also rarely gets reached on Outside Zone but is prone to getting trapped on power schemes. Needs to a better job of finding the ball when he is in the back field.

Best Trait: Ball Get Off

Worst Trait: Pad Level

Best Film: TCU (2018)

Worst Film: Oklahoma (2017)

Dre’Mont Jones possesses a number of athletic traits and is nuanced (enough) with his hands to become a disruptive 3 technique at the pro level. However, his pad level issues could be detrimental to his success. He must learn to stay low out of his stance or he will continue to be a liability in run defense. A gap penetrating scheme is ideal for his skill set.
