After the long wait, the trade talks between the Heat, Grizzlies, and Thunder have drawn to a close. The Miami Heat came out with a bit less than what they wanted since they did not receive Danilo Gallinari from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Heat gained two role players in Solomon Hill and Jae Crowder, along with an aging veteran in Andre Iguodala, while the Memphis Grizzlies came out receiving Justise Winslow, James Johnson, and Dion Waiters. This trade was beneficial to both teams.
The Miami Heat freed a total of $41,697,100 in cap space for the 2021 offseason. The only potential money they gained for the 2021 offseason is with Andre Iguodala’s extension which was for two years, $30 million. The second year is a team option that could potentially bring him back for $15 million. The Miami Heat are trying to free cap space for the 2021 off-season in the attempt to go after free agent Giannis Antetokounmpo.
This trade made the Heat one step closer to achieving their goal and sets them up nicely for the future. In the short term, the Miami Heat have lost a key role player in James Johnson, and a young developed player in Justise Winslow. Winslow has had an injury-plagued career so far with not playing a whole full season since his rookie year.
Dion Waiters, the last player the Heat lost, as been spotty at times, and has run into some trouble this season with the Miami Heat. Losing these three players are all small losses to the Heat in the long run. The Heat’s biggest gain player wise is Andre Iguodala.
Iguodala is a veteran who has been a dominant presence during playoff runs with Golden State, while also winning a finals MVP during that time. Iguodala has been sitting out this season waiting for the Grizzlies to trade him to a contender. Andre got his wish and is now ready to play.
Grizzlies, now happy that they have players that are willing to play for them, won out on this trade also. The Grizzlies got a shooter in Dion Waiters who, if content with his role, could bring solid points off the bench. The Memphis Grizzlies traded James Johnson to the Timberwolves and in return received Gorgui Dieng.
Gorgui Dieng is a good role player who can be beneficial in a limited role. Dieng is also a good mentor for young Grizzlies players like Jaren Jackson Jr., and Brandon Clarke. The last player, Justise Winslow, is the biggest move in this trade. If he can stay healthy, Winslow could be a great 3-and-D player whose versatility could make a huge impact for the Memphis Grizzlies. He is only 23 years old and even with his injury history, still has a future in the NBA.
