Washington releases Dwayne Haskins

After a lackluster performance on Sunday vs the Carolina Panthers, the Washington Football Team has released 2019 first-round pick, Dwayne Haskins. Here is the statement from head coach Ron Rivera after the release:

Within the last two years, Dwayne Haskins went from a Heisman finalist to a first-round pick, to released before the end of his second season in the NFL. With the bad play on the field, combined with immaturity in the locker room and violating COVID protocols twice, he did not give the organization any other choice but to release him. From the time he was drafted in 2019, Haskins has had his maturity questioned not only by the media but those within the coaching staff and front office.

Haskins in 16 games (13 starts) as the WFT QB, has a 3-10 record, completing 60.1% of his passes, for 2804 yards, 12 TDs, and 14 INTs. The best stretch of games he had was last season in the six quarters between the Philadelphia Eagles and NY Giants game before he hurt his ankles. He lacked consistency, never showing he was going to be a true NFL QB. Will he ever be an NFL QB? What organization will give him another opportunity? Will he mature?

Haskins is the latest failure in the Dan Snyder quarterback carousel. From Jeff George, RG3, to Dwayne Haskins, Dan Snyder has failed to find a franchise QB. Before the hiring of Ron Rivera, Dan Snyder was making the majority QB moves, and almost none of them have worked. With Haskins now gone, Snyder is the only true off the field problem for Washington. Dan Snyder is currently under investigation for sexual misconduct situation for a $1.6M settlement from 2009 and is also claiming he is being extorted by one of the minority owners.

With all that is going on, Washington still has an opportunity to clinch the NFC East against the Philadelphia Eagles next week on Sunday Night Football with a win. Coach Rivera says he’s hopeful QB Alex Smith will be ready, but if he is not ready, Taylor Heinicke will be ready to start.
