The 3 most surprising cuts from cutdown day

This years cutdown day didn’t have very many surprising moves. However, there was several that made a lot of fans scratch their heads in disbelief. In this article, we will be going through those moves & what teams have shown reported interest in them.

  • Cam Newton, New England Patriots. The Patriots re-signed Cam to a heavily incentivized deal earlier this off-season to have him compete with Mac Jones for the starting job. After Cam’s release Tuesday, that leaves Mac as the only other QB on their active roster, with Brian Hoyer & Garrett Gilbert on the practice squad. Cam was signed late in Free Agency last year & started most of last season, where he totaled 2,657 yards, 8 TDs, and 10 INTs with a 65.7 completion %. The Dallas Cowboys reportedly did their due diligence on Cam, per Josina Anderson. This was before Signing Will Grier, however.
  • Benardrick McKinney, Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins acquired McKinney in a trade with Houston for Shaq Lawson (who’s now in New York) in March. Since then, he has taken most of the starting reps in training camp, so it came as a shock to the NFL world when the Dolphins decided to release him. With Houston in 2019, McKinney totaled 101 tackles, 1 INT, and 4 QB hits before missing most of last season with an injury. The New York Jets have reportedly shown the most interest in McKinney, according to Justin Fried.
  • Jacob Hollister, Buffalo Bills. The Bills signed Hollister to a deal this spring with the hopes he could compliment Dawson Knox nicely in the TE room. Well, he missed most of camp & preseason with an injury. In the lone preseason game he played, Hollister looked good, totaling 3 receptions for 53 yards vs. the Chicago Bears. Hollister shouldn’t be a FA for very long, with multiple teams looking for a valuable TE. Hollister’s best season came with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019, totaling 41 receptions for 349 yards & 3 TDs with 8.5 yards per reception.
