3 Surprises From Round 1 of The Draft

The 1st round of the 2021 NFL Draft ended yesterday with a few surprising picks. And a few surprising players who fell to Round 2 as well, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah being one of them. The draft is always fun because it shows us a different side of players. Like Kwity Paye telling his mother she’s retired after being drafted today, or watching Penei Sewell’s family cheer him after being selected by the Detroit Lions. It also gives the die-hard fans, like myself, a chance to dive into positions of need, or who goes higher than others.

  1. Justin Fields falling out of the top 10. Who thought this would happen? We thought if Fields fell to the Panthers there would be multiple teams trying to move up to land him. However, the board fell differently, the Panthers somehow still believe in Sam Darnold, and the Bears have their new franchise QB. The Bears made a shocking trade, giving up 4 picks to the NY Giants to land Fields, who will be their presumptive starter. In his final year of college, Fields totaled 2,100 yards, 22 TDs, and 5 rushing TDs. If Matt Nagy & co. don’t screw up this pick, Fields will be their Qb for a very, very long time.
  2. The New York Giants selecting Kadarius Toney. I get it, the Giants are trying to build around Daniel Jones. But, you paid heavily for Kenny Golladay in Free Agency, you already had Sterling Shepard & Darius Slayton, and, you could have found a better WR with a 1st round pick. Rashod Bateman was still available, Elijah Moore was, and is, still available. Both would have been better options at that spot. By saying that, I think pairing Toney with Golladay & Shepard will make for a nice trio. NY has their own Deebo Samuel.
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars selecting Travis Etienne. Jags reunited Etienne with 1st overall pick Trevor Lawrence, but still have James Robinson on your roster. Unless you plan on running multiple RBs or designing plays for Etienne, this just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me when you have bigger needs to fill. I think Etienne is a good player, but the pick just doesn’t make sense right now.

HM: Trey Lance going to the San Francisco 49ers, Ja’Marr Chase being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals, and Jaycee horn being the 1st corner selected.

Day 2 begins today at 7:00 with the likes of Christian Barmore, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and Azeez Ojulari still available. Could the Packers finally give Rodgers a weapon that he’s so desperately needed for years, or leave him out to dry again?
