5 Roster Bubble Candidates across the NFL

We’re back with this years edition of roster bubble candidates across the NFL. This year the league is changing the way roster cuts happen, making teams cut 5 players a week until week 3 if the preseason; When they have to get down to 53. Last years cuts were headlined by Washington releasing RB Adrian Peterson and the Miami Dolphins releasing QB Josh Rosen.

  1. Mario Addison, DE, Buffalo Bills. The Buffalo Bills made a bunch of additions to their pass rush position, bringing in Efe Obada, along with Greg Rousseau & Carlos Basham Jr in the draft. Mario Addison, while still productive, may be the victim of a cap casualty. Trading him frees up $5M of cap space, and allows Buffalo to play their young guys more. Rousseau looked good in his preseason debut, sacking Jared Goff in the first quarter
  2. Giovani Bernard, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers are already deep at RB with Leonard Fournette, Ke’Shawn Vaughn, CJ Procise, and Troymaine Pope. Bernard totaled 3,697, and 22 rushing TDs, with 4 yard average in his career with Cincy. Tampa just signed Bernard in April, but may move on from ‘Gio’ sooner rather than later. He can still be a serviceable back, however, in a crowded backfield like that, Tampa may play the numbers game & let him catch on elsewhere.
  3. Janoris Jenkins, CB, Tennessee Titans. Jenkins comes over to Tennessee after spending the last 2 seasons with the New Orleans Saints. After an abysmal 2 seasons with the Saints, Jenkins looks to fix his career in Tennessee. However, rookie Caleb Farley may take his roster spot away. In 2019, Jenkins allowed 57 receptions, 822 yards (#67), and 7 TDs (#71) with 14.4 yards allowed per reception.
  4. David Johnson, RB, Houston Texans. Johnson hasn’t had the start to his Texans career than he had hoped. With the additions of Phillip Lindsay, Rex Burkhead, and Mark Ingram, that may be enough to push Johnson out of Houston. Houston has tried to make it work with Johnson, with him being the center of their trade with Arizona for Deandre Hopkins. But in the beginning of a rebuild, it may be best for both sides to part ways.
  5. Nick Foles, QB, Chicago Bears. The Bears acquired Nick Foles last season in a trade with the Jaguars. After the additions of Justin Fields & Andy Dalton, Foles has been demoted to the 3rd string QB. With rumors of Foles being unhappy with his current state on the Bears, they could just look to move on from him and wipe their hands entirely of that trade. If Chicago can work out a trade, that would save them $4M in cap space. Foles can still be a serviceable backup & can be a good mentor to young QB.
