Free Agency Day One: Jaguars big spenders, Bengals add to their OL

Day one of the NFL’s tampering period came and went, and it came in its usual fiery entrance, with some teams spending big, like the Jacksonville Jaguars & Cincinnati Bengals, And other teams like the Buffalo Bills who were forced to create cap space, releasing Daryl Williams & extending Mitch Morse. Here’s what we’ve learned from day one of free agency:

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars came in prepared to do one thing: completely reinvent their offense. Adding Brandon Scherff, TE Evan Engram (one year/$9M), & Christian Kirk (four years/$72M, up to $84M), along with Foley Fatukasi & Foye Oluokon on the defense. With new HC Doug Pederson in there, they’re looking to completely change the direction of this team, and adding two players like that on offense is a good start. Jaguars are trying to find Lawrence a reliable pass catcher, and so far this off-season, they’ve brought in a couple to try & fix that, upgrading at TE, and bringing in Kirk to go along with Laviska Shenault & Marvin Jones. Then, there was some not so good moves from them, like signing WR Zay Jones to a three year/$30M deal. Nevertheless, they were certainly active in the first day of free agency.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals knew they had to go into this off-season with a better OL, and with $50M in cap space, they’ve done that so far. Adding Alex Cappa (four years/$40M), and Ted Karras (three years/$18M). Both will play a vital role in helping keep Joe Burrow upright & healthy, while Karras plays a significant role on the OL. However, losing CJ Uzomah to the New York Jets will be costly to their offense, as he totaled 493 yards & five TDs last season.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers came into this off-season with a lot of cap space ($20M) & a bunch of holes on their defense. Well, they’ve filled two of them already, acquiring pass rusher Khalil Mack from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2nd round pick & a 6th round pick, and signing CB JC Jackson to a five year/$82M deal. Pairing Joey Bosa with Khalil Mack & Asante Samuel Jr with JC Jackson will put their team in Super Bowl contention.

Other signings: CJ Uzomah (Jets), Haason Reddick (Eagles), Mitchell Trubisky (Steelers), Laken Tomlinson (Jets), Carlton Davis (Buccaneers).
