Week 2 Power Rankings
- Arizona Coyotes
Record: 0-4-1
Last week: 32
You could flip a coin for last place between the Blackhawks and the Coyotes, but for me, the Coyotes win the race for last right now. The Coyotes point differential is -17, which is far worse in the NHL.
- Chicago Blackhawks
Record: 0-5-1
Last week: 30
The race is on…for a win. Blackhawks remain winless through 6 games, and Chicago fans are beginning to lose patience.
- Montreal Canadiens
Record: 1-5-0
Last Week: 24
The Canadians finally got their first win of the season on Saturday, winning 6-1 against the Red Wings. They have to hope getting a win will boost the confidence in the locker room.
- Anaheim Ducks
Record 2-3-1
Last Week: 31
The Ducks play hard, and they proved that against a good Wild team this last week bringing them to overtime, and eventually losing. This team is still very young so I don’t expect many wins, but a bright future is ahead.
- Detroit Red Wings
Record: 3-2-1
Last Week: 29
Back-to-back losses where they were outscored a combined 8-1, lands them back in the bottom three on this week’s rankings.
- Seattle Kraken
Record: 1-4-1
Last Week: 21
The Canucks spoiled the Krakens’ home opener defeating them 4-2. Although it is very very early, it seems the Kraken may not be as good as the Golden Knights were in their inaugural season.
- Ottawa Senators
Record: 2-3-0
Last Week: 23
Senators have dropped two of their last three. The team looks to remain in rebuild mode.
- Los Angeles Kings
Record: 1-3-1
Last Week: 18
One win in five games is not what the Kings or their fans want. Goaltending has been a big issue this year, and to go along with that Drew Doughty is hurt.
- Buffalo Sabres
Record: 3-1-1
Last Week: 28
The Sabres have come back to life losing back-to-back games.
23. San Jose Sharks
Record: 4-1-0
Last Week: 26
It’s the Erik Karlsson early this season with 6 points in just 5 games. The Sharks are starting the season off hot, something a lot of fans have been waiting for.
- Nashville Predators
Record: 2-4-0
Last Week: 27
The Predators avoid a 1-5 start beating the Wild on Sunday. The Predators still don’t look to be too much of a threat.
- Columbus Blue Jackets
Record: 3-2-0
Last Week: 22
The Blue Jackets really haven’t had a statement win quite yet, they have beaten struggling squads. I think this team with new leadership can be competitive, but all playmakers on the team have to bring it every night.
- New Jersey Devils
Record: 3-1-0
Last Week: 20
The Devils got bad news on Jacks Hughes, placing him on IR. The Devils have had early success, but now they will have to find some skill elsewhere on their roster.
- Philadelphia Flyers
Record: 2-1-1
Last Week: 19
The addition of Cam Atkinson is looking to be a great move. He has provided a new offensive weapon that the Flyers were missing a season ago.
- Winnipeg Jets
Record: 2-2-1
Last Week: 17
The Jets have been better than their record, but the defense has been a concern.
Record: 2-1-1
Last Week: 25
The Flames have been fueled by a hot start from Elias Lindholm who has a goal in each game and three on Saturday.
- Vancouver Canucks
Record: 3-2-1
Last Week: 16
Connor Garland has been everything they got him for and more, he has 8 points in just 6 games so far this year.
- Dallas Stars
Record: 3-2-0
Last Week: 14
The Stars stars have to play better than my wordplay. Seguin and Benn have combined for just 3 points in 5 games. That is simply not good enough for the team to stay competitive.
- Las Vegas Golden Knights
Record: 1-4-0
Last Week 10
Injuries continue to pile up, with Mark Stone, Max Pacioretty, Alex Tuch, Nolan Patrick, Alec Martinez, and Zach Whitecloud.
- New York Islanders
Record: 3-2-1
Last Week: 11
The islanders have bounced back since their horrible defensive start and are above .500 for the first time this year.
- New York Rangers
Record: 4-1-1
Last Week: 15
The Rangers are off to a hot start and as a team that has a lot of playmakers, it seems they could compete for a playoff spot barring injuries.
- Toronto Maple Leafs
Record: 2-3-1
Last Week: 7
Auston Mathews and Mitch Marner have 0 combined goals through 6 games…
- St. Louis Blues
Record: 4-0-0
Last Week: 13
The Blues remain perfect through 4 games, a great start for the team with so many question marks before the season.
- Washington Capitals
Record: 3-0-2
Last Week: 9
Alex Ovechkin has 10 points in 5 games, 5 goals, and 5 assists, that’s insane. He doesn’t just want to get the goal record, he wants the Hart this year.
- Pittsburgh Penguins
Record: 3-0-2
Last Week: 8
Mike Sullivan and Pittsburgh depth are to thank for the Penguin’s quick start to the year.
- Boston Bruins
Record: 3-1-0
Last Week: 6
The Bruins have been strong everywhere on the ice, but the competition just has not been too strong. Bruins should be a contender all year, but right now there is 6 team who have played better.
- Carolina Hurricanes
Record: 4-0-0
The unbeaten Hurricanes have been helped by an incredible start from Frederik Anderson who has four wins, and an outstanding .944 sv%.
- Colorado Avalanche
Record: 2-3-0
Last Week: 3
Safe to say MacKinnon is still very very good at hockey. He has 5 points in only 3 games played. The Avs coming off back-to-back losses come back and defeat the defending champs in a shootout. I expect this team to bounce back from a slow start and get back to their winning ways.
- Tampa Bay Lighting
Record: 2-2-1
Last Week: 4
I am not going to overreact to the Lightning, not above .500. They are still a great team.
- Minnesota Wild
Record: 4-1-0
Last Week: 2
The Wild were served their first loss of the season Sunday evening, losing to the Predators 5-2. The team came off of two emotional overtime wins, so it was expected to be some fatigue.
Record: 5-0-0
Last Week: 5
I mean what can I say about McDavid that hasn’t already been said. He has 13 points in 5 games this season, and if you’re counting 6 goals in said games. Not to mention Zach Hyman who was acquired this off-season has been excellent as well.
- Florida Panthers
Record: 5-0-0
Last Week 1
My crush on the Panthers is very obvious, but can you blame me?! I mean even Sergei Bobrovsky has gotten off to a hot start allowing less than two goals a game in his four starts. This team is so well-rounded which is why I can see them here on this list all year long.
