With the third week of preseason in the books and plenty of cuts coming, what will the Jets roster look like come Week 1 ?
Predicting the 53 Man Roster
QB(2): Sam Darnold, Trevor Siemian
The Jets currently have four arms in camp for preseason but neither Luke Falk or Davis Webb have looked good enough to stick on the roster. It seems that Falk will be sent to the practice squad while Siemian is kept on as the backup.
RB (4): Le’Veon Bell, Ty Montgomery, Bilal Powell, Trenton Cannon
The odd man out in the running back room will be Elijah McGuire who had been the no.1 during the last four weeks of the 2018 season. Cannon’s ability to provide on special teams will be what separates him. The top three of Bell, Montgomery, and Powell are no surprise.
WR(6): Quincy Enunwa, Robby Anderson, Jamison Crowder, Greg Dortch, Josh Bellamy, Deontay Burnett
The top three wideouts are set and are locked in but the backup spots are all up for grabs. It looks like it will be Dortch, Burnett and Bellamy as they have made the most noise during the preseason.
TE(3): Ryan Griffin, Trevon Wesco, Eric Tomlinson
With top man Chris Herndon suspended for the first four weeks, the TE position will be a committee of a few names. Veteran Ryan Griffin will make the team as the top guy with Herndon out, and rookie Wesco will be a lock as well. The third spot is up for grabs though.
OL(9): Kelechi Osemele, Ryan Kalil, Brandon Shell, Kelvin Beachum, Brian Winters, Tom Compton, Alex Lewis, Jonotthan Harrison, Chuma Edoga
The new starting five of Kelechi Osemele, Ryan Kalil, Kelvin Beachum, Brian Winters, and Brandon Shell is locked in while backup roles are seemingly penciled in as well. With bigger holes on the roster, there may not be more moves made to address the offensive line.
DL(6): Quinnen Williams, Leonard Williams, Henry Anderson, Steve McLendon, Bronson Kaufusi, Nathan Shepard
One of the major strengths of this team is the defensive line. The addition of Quinnen Williams will help those around him blossom. Bronson Kaufusi has blossomed during the offseason locking down a roster spot.
LB(4): CJ Mosley, Blake Cashman, Neville Hewitt, James Burgess
The news of the terrible injury to starting inside linebacker Avery Williamson late in preseason action will be big. The injury hurts the team’s depth at a position of strength and will now push rookie Blake Cashman and James Burgess into major roles.
Edge(4); Jachai Polite, Jordan Jenkins, Brandon Copeland, Frankie Luvu
This group includes three players from 2018 who have proved what they can provide to the team and will be locks. Rookie Jachai Polite will make the team as well. There are no surprises with this group but it will be interesting to watch how they progress.
CB(6): Trumaine Johnson, Daryl Roberts, Parry Nickerson, Marcus Cooper, Brian Poole, *trade/FA pickup
This is by far the shakiest group on the entire team. Marcus Cooper is a recent pickup but will have a major chance to make the team. Douglas will have to continue to look through the waiver wire and potential trades as cuts begin to take place.
Safeties(4): Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye, Doug Middleton, Rontez Miles
The starting duo of Adams and Maye should come as no surprise while longtime backups Middleton and Miles solidify their roles.
ST(3): Taylor Bertolet, Lachlan Edwards, Thomas Hennessy
The kicker remains an issue as Chandler Catanzaro after the first preseason games and Bertolet missed two extra points against the Falcons in their second preseason game. Bertolet is anything but a lock as competition will likely be brought in.
INJ/SUS: Chris Herndon, Blessaun Austin, Kyron Brown
