NFL Rumors: O.J. Howard to the Bengals?

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been speculation that O.J. Howard could be on the move. These rumors were mostly unfounded, but now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trading for Rob Gronkowski to pair with Tom Brady, there is a much higher possibility that Howard gets dealt before the new season begins.

Of the teams listed as top potential suitors, the Bengals appear to have the best situation for Howard. They recently lost starter Tyler Eifert in free agency, leaving C.J. Uzomah at the top of their depth chart. Uzomah is not exactly a game-changer, as he only had 27 catches for under 300 yards and 2 touchdowns last season. There is a vacancy to fill at the tight end position, and Howard could be the guy.

Even though the position is a need for Cincinnati, Howard would be a good scheme fit as well. With Joe Burrow officially coming to town, the Bengals will almost certainly implement more of a spread offense to work to his strengths as a quarterback. A receiving threat tight end like Howard could thrive in this offense, unlike an average-at-best guy like Uzomah.

Furthermore, Howard’s asking price should be cheap. The Buccaneers have no use for him anymore and his contract only has a couple of years left. The Bengals most likely won’t make a blockbuster trade, but if the price is right, then expect Cincinnati to make a move. Remember, these Bengals were also in trade talks for DeAndre Hopkins earlier in the off-season, so they aren’t afraid to make moves anymore.

Ultimately, I believe a trade would be beneficial for both sides, given the price is right. Howard could revive his career and the Bengals get another weapon for Joe Burrow. It’s a win-win situation for all parties.
