Russell Wilson in excellent shape to start OTAs

After having the worst career of his season in 2023, Russell Wilson is determined to bounce back under new head coach Sean Payton. As the first day of OTAs came to a conclusion, the media saw a new version of Wilson.

He looked to be in the best shape of his career, and, although he declined to answer how much weight he had lost, it was clear he’s been putting in the work. He also spoke about how he feels great both physically and mentally, and eager to get back out on the field.

This is excellent news for Denver, as they’ve invested heavily this off-season on protecting their franchise quarterback. Sean Payton also had nothing but positive things to say about Wilson, as the offense continues to build chemistry.

Injury updates

Starting with Javonte Williams, who is on the field practicing on a limited basis. Sean Payton also said he looked good, and they continue to monitor his progress. This is the best-case scenario for Williams, as barring no setbacks is set to return in week one against the Raiders.

Randy Gregory was also practicing with the team today, which was the first update we’ve received since he suffered his season-ending knee injury. The Broncos are taking things slow with Gregory, and he’s felt great.

Jerry Jeudy suffered a minor injury in today’s practice, per Sean Payton. He collided with CB Ja’Quan McMillian during a team period. He limped off and sat the rest of the practice on the sideline. Payton said he bruised his thigh, nothing to be concerned about.

Two defensive linemen had off-season surgeries and will be sidelined during OTAs. These two players are D.J. Jones and Mike Purcell. Baron Browning was also not seen on Thursday, as he was excused for personal matters.

First-day takeaways

The first day of OTAs was a success, and the culture change under Sean Payton is already starting to show. We received great news on the injury front, and are already in a better position than last season.

Although Jeudy was sidelined, he made an excellent reception downfield to start the day, and Courtland Sutton was said to have looked “explosive” throughout the day. For Denver’s offense to really flourish, they need Sutton to return to his 2019 form where he was a true starting receiver.

Lastly, all the players seemed to be motivated and have a chip on their shoulders entering the new season. New additions such as Zach Allen and Mike McGlinchey have praised Sean Payton and said the team looks determined and ready to win.
