Top 5 Landing Spots for Philip Rivers

Recently, reports came out that the Los Angeles Chargers will not bring back their star QB Philip Rivers. Rivers spent his entire career with the Chargers, amassing 59,271 yards, 397 TDS, 198 INTs, and a completion percentage of 64.7. Rivers was also selected to 8 Pro Bowls, and was the NFL’s Comeback Player of The Year in 2013. In this article we will be discussing 5 potential teams for Philip Rivers in 2020.

  1. Washington Redskins. The Redskins drafted Dwayne Haskins with hopes of him becoming their franchise QB, but Washington has no established veteran leader to help Haskins grow. Washington had Case Keenum & Colt McCoy as their veterans in the QB room in 2019, so having Rivers would be huge for Haskins’ development.
  2. New York Giants. The Giants drafted Daniel Jones last year to be their guy. Jones couldn’t have asked for a better mentor than Eli Manning for his rookie season, but with the recent retirement of Manning, and room left for Jones to grow still, bringing in another mentor would help Jones a lot. Rivers would have a huge impact on how Jones develops with his recent success in San Diego, and now Los Angeles.
  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers could use an improvement over Jameis Winston, whether they think that’s Rivers, or if they want him as a backup/bridge QB for a rookie this year is up to them. But Rivers would be a vital piece to the Buccaneers current team. Bruce Arians has a good track record with veteran QBs, most notably what he did with Carson Palmer in Arizona. This would definitely be an interesting team for Rivers.
  4. Chicago Bears. The Bears drafted Mitchell Trubisky with hopes that he could be their franchise QB for the next 10+ years, but has fallen short of those expectations, With a rocky start to his young NFL career, Chicago needs to give him the best opportunity to succeed before time runs out. Rivers is a very smart quarterback, if anyone on the Free Agent market can mentor Trubisky, it’s Rivers.
  5. Indianapolis Colts. Frank Reich, the Colts HC, has ties to Philip Rivers, Reich was Rivers’ QB Coach in San Diego in 2013, the year he won Comeback Player of The Year. Indianapolis has had a rocky QB room since Andrew Luck suddenly retired. If Indianapolis decides to keep Jacoby Brissett for the long run, it would be a good idea to bring in a veteran QB to fill that role.

The market for Philip Rivers should be pretty warm with teams looking to fill a bridge QB role or a backup role. Of course, RIvers, who is 36, could decide to step away from the game and only play for 1 team in his career.
